The theme of award-winning artist Connie Freid’s work
is “The Human Spirit” – our ability to celebrate life in
the midst of uncertainty. Her paintings often explore her subject’s
social or cultural identity. Art critics have called her work powerful, poignant,
and provocative - “evocative of Renaissance religious art”, combining
a sense of peacefulness and melancholy.
Blending abstract and realistic elements, Connie paints canvasses that create
moods and tell stories to plumb depths deeper than traditional portraiture.
For example, her series of women and roses refers to the fleeting nature of
beauty.
Connie is fascinated by certain faces and chooses subjects who project inner
strength. Starting with an abstract background, she builds up a textured surface.
Her use of mixed media, including newspaper images, free-form verse, or appropriated
text, conveys a subliminal message. They draw the viewer into the work, offering
itself first as portraiture, then demanding a closer look and, finally, raising
awareness of issues.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Connie furthered her art education
at SUNY Purchase, Silvermine Guild of Art and the International Center of Photography.
In addition to several solo exhibits, her work has been juried into international
as well as national shows.
