Marlie Burton-Roche, a Canadian visual artist and political
activist, works in solidarity with the revolutionary social movement in
El Salvador. Her art represents a merging of a very private career with
what she calls "the nightmare of history in the making." Twice
during the war years she was captured and detained by the Salvadoran military.
Her current artwork, a series called "I Have Heard the Red Horses,"
represents what Marlie calls "the radical unconscious"-a reconciling
of unity and diversity that reflects the contemporary need to create a conscience.
Aspects of past horrors are still evidenced in these recent works but the
past is evoked in a juxtaposition that illuminates the present. "The
political situation in El Salvador becomes a symbol of the current unconsummated
moment, highlighting our apprehension of reality but at the same time strengthening
our sympathy for our fellow man."
Marlie's paintings have been exhibited across Canada,
in the U.S.A., and in Europe. She has artworks in public and private collections
in Canada, Israel, India, Britain and France.
